Getting Around Toronto

Plan Toronto movement using TTC, walking, streetcars, GO, airport rail, cycling, ferries and occasional driving.

Toronto’s central grid is understandable, but distance and congestion can surprise visitors. The most efficient trip combines walking within clusters and transit between them.

Use the subway for long central jumps

The subway is usually the simplest backbone. Streetcars and buses fill the gaps, but they share streets with traffic in many places.

Understand fare rules

As reviewed in August 2026, TTC adult PRESTO/debit/credit fare was $3.30 and the PRESTO day pass was $13.50. A two-hour transfer applies to eligible tap payments. Monthly fare capping was scheduled to begin September 1, 2026. Always check current TTC information.

One Fare regional connections

Ontario’s One Fare program can reduce duplicate charges between the TTC and participating regional systems or GO Transit when the correct payment method and transfer conditions are met.

Walking and streetcar awareness

Watch for turning vehicles, bicycles and streetcar tracks. When boarding or leaving a streetcar from the roadway, follow signals and local rules; do not step into traffic without checking.

Ferries and islands

Toronto Island ferries are a separate trip component with schedules, ticketing and weather exposure. Buy official tickets and leave time for queues during busy periods.
